One example

As an example of a recovery project the island Avernakø is chosen.
Avernakø is aprox. 6 km² large with habitats of hilly farmland with many ponds, meadows, saltmarses and dry grassland. The south coast have up to 22m high sun exposed sandy cliffs.

Habitat management

An intensive recovery program for Bombina bombina and Bufo viridis has been running since 1983. 25 ponds have been dredged/new dug to help bombina. To help Bufo viridis 5 ponds have been made and 4 wet meadows/salt marshes consisting of 27 ha have been fenced to restart cattle grazing.

Results

Bombina recoverd from 13 individuals in 1989 to 600 in 1995. Bufo viridis recoverd from 10 adults in 1983 to 2800 in 1995.  The management had an significant effect on other amphibians as Bufo calamita and triturus cristatus, too.
